Can you elaborate on the KALSI approach to clinical,

evidence-based practice?

Clinical research to date has unfortunately had a limited impact at the

coalface of clinical practice. At KALSI we are passionate about the

HIIHFWLYHQHVV RI VSHFLÀF WUHDWPHQW IRU PXVFXORVNHOHWDO SUREOHPV

Ten years ago we embarked upon a research program to prove

WKDW KLJK TXDOLW\ WUHDWPHQW ZKHQ VSHFLÀFDOO\ SURYLGHG WR FDUHIXOO\

VHOHFWHG SDWLHQWV UHVXOWV LQ JUHDW RXWFRPHV 7KH 6SHFLÀF 7UHDWPHQW

of Problems of the Spine (STOPS) trials are now complete and, for

WKH ÀUVW WLPH FOHDUO\ GHPRQVWUDWH WKH VLJQLÀFDQW EHQHÀWV RI VSHFLÀF

treatment on low back pain.

In order to assist health practitioners in adopting evidence-based

DQG VSHFLÀF WUHDWPHQW PHWKRGV VXFK DV WKH 67236 SURWRFRO ZH

have created a range of free and paid eLearning modules, eBooks

and face-to-face short courses.

High-quality and effective treatment should result in successful

commercial outcomes in private practice. Yet, in our experience,

KHDOWK SUDFWLWLRQHUV FDQ EHQHÀW IURP EXVLQHVV VSHFLÀF NQRZOHGJH

DLPHG DW PD[LPLVLQJ SURÀW DQG HIÀFLHQF\ .$/6, EXVLQHVV FRDFKLQJ

provides a range of education options and resources to assist

health practitioners in this regard.

When did you begin developing the KALSI clinical education

products, including the modules?

The clinical protocols for back pain are the result of 25 years of

clinical and research experience culminating in the STOPS trials.

Five years ago, the KALSI directors acquired a software program

that enabled knowledge to be packaged into interactive online

learning modules. I provided the clinical content and KALSI’s

Marcelo Moscoso was responsible for producing the modules.

Apart from writing the modules, substantial resources and time were

required to develop professional-quality visual material, including

pictures and video.

Quality of our educational offering is fundamental to the KALSI

DSSURDFK :H EHOLHYH WKDW FOLQLFDO WULDOV VKRXOG UHÁHFW WKH FRPSOH[LW\

of clinical practice, which is why the STOPS clinical protocol

integrated a range of approaches for back pain depending on the

patient barriers to recovery. This included principles from Geoff

Maitland, Robin McKenzie, Peter O’Sullivan and Shirley Sahrman—

integrated with the latest concepts on motor control, psychosocial

factors and neurophysiological factors. A high-quality treatment

approach should integrate the best available evidence in a manner

the process of developing the STOPS clinical protocol, and then

evaluating it in a clinical trial, was a massive undertaking that took

a decade to complete.

How have the modules been constructed and separated?

How important was the research base in informing each

module’s composition?

management in private practice; two modules focusing on lumbar

assessment (standard and advanced); and two modules focusing

on the treatment of back pain according to the STOPS protocols.

What has been some of the feedback that you have received

about KALSI’s online education suite?

Practitioners have found the modules to be a great way of updating

their skills in their own time. Additionally, the interactive nature of

the modules has been popular. A number of private practice owners

have also purchased the full package of modules and used them as

the basis of continuing education for their practitioners.

You are currently running a course as part of the APA PD

structure entitled ‘Practical physiotherapy management of

low back pain’. What can you tell us about the course?

The course has been developed on evidence-based practice

principles, which includes the STOPS trial. The emphasis is
